Diabetes ..... from eating too much sugar??

NO!

Diabetes Mellitus is actaully a medical condition often resulting from the insufficient supply of or lack of insulin from the pancreas.

If controlled, people with Diabetes can live avery long and fufilled life.

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes: Usually diagnosed in children, occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. Insulin, which helps glucose enter the cells, is an essential body requirement that ensures body energy needs are met. Approximately 10 per cent of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes: The remaining 90 per cent are affected by type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin that is produced. Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adulthood, although recently increasing numbers of children in high-risk populations are being diagnosed.

Gestational Diabetes, the third type of Diabetes, is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. It affects two to four per cent of all pregnancies and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.

This life long condition is characterised by one of three situations - sugar levels which are balanced, or sugars levels which are too high or too low, as seen in the pictures.

Treatment (Tx):

* When in doubt, give sugar (glucose) if the person is conscious (fruit juice, honey, cookies etc.) Nothing by mouth to an unconscious person!
* Seek medical attention (911) if the situation does not better itself (after the sugar has been given), or if the person falls unconscious.
* DO NOT give insulin.
* Treat for Shock and monitor the ABC"s.
