Aquatic Emergency Care

AEC provides the knowledge and techniques of emergency care which are useful in an aquatic environment. In a learn-by-doing approach, AEC teaches the care of injuries or illnesses common to pool waterfront or lake situations. Emphasis is placed on vital signs, priority assessment and basic aquatic emergency care principles.

Though experience, maturity, and proficiency of AEC candidates may vary greatly, the AEC program is adapted to meet the first aid needs of the learners. This course is designed and tailor made to suit the specific needs and experiences of the learners.

The following are core topics for the AEC program:

(1) Victim assessment
(2) Initiating calls for professional assistance
(3) Treatment where appropriate in a logical sequence
(4) Rescue emphasizing victim recovery, removal and care
(5) Characteristics of drowning patterns, trends, and common aquatic accidents
(6) Effects of panic and stress upon a rescuer, victim, or bystander
(7) Effective communication between rescuers and victims
(8) Follow-up procedures including appropriate contact with EMS (emergency medical services)
(9) Examination and care of a victim suffering from:
  • bone injury
  • joint injury
  • abdominal injury
  • chest injury
  • heat-induced injury
  • cold-induced injury
  • pressure-induced injury
  • facial injury
  • suspected head injury
  • severe chest pain
  • unconsciousness
  • external bleeding
  • other medical emergency (seizure, diabetes, poisoning, stroke, asthma)

(10) Rescue breathing
(11) Dealing with an obstructed airway
(12) Dealing with vomit
(13) Single-rescuer CPR for adult, child, and infant
(14) Care of a victim with suspected spinal injury on land and in water
(15) Recruitment and supervision of bystanders
(16) Oxygen supplementation

At ADET, our Emergency Care Educators are professional Aquatic Emergency Care Instructor-Trainers and Examiners, proficient in the skills and techniques of aquatic emergencies, throughout pool, waterfront, lake and surf emergency situations.

Our resource materials have been researched and updated to provide each candidate with the reference material needed to support and reinforce skills and techniques learned. Our trainers foster a positive and co-operative atmosphere for learning, integrating topics so that overall course themes are clear and provide simple action plans for dealing with emergencies. By maximizing practical experience, candidates learn best by DOING, allowing for practice and review of vital skills. Evaluation is progressive, providing opportunities for self, peer and instructor feedback.
