Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems

Training Program

Developed in 1985 by both Government, Industry and Labor, the WHMIS program was designed to create an understanding for the workers' and the communities' right to know about the physical and chemical hazards in the workplace and surrounding environment.

The purpose of this program is to prevent, avoid and therefore reduce illness and injury through education. By increasing the understanding towards hazardous materials including the use of such materials or entering into an unsafe environment, and by taking universal precautions for protection, the workplace becomes a safer place. These unsafe materials can include dangerous chemicals, daily used chemical products, or body fluid (blood, regurgitation) at the scene of a first-aid emergency.

Our WHMIS program and WHMIS Refresher Program include the following:

  • WHMIS History and Implementation
  • Recognition and Application of Possible Hazards and Risks
  • Specific Risk Identification (specific to the workplace)
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (general overview & workplace specific)
  • Safe Handling and Control Methods
  • Emergency Protocol (as set by the specific workplace)
  • Emergency Scene Assessment
  • P.P.E. (personal protective equipment)
  • Occupational Hygiene
